Let’s build a school as strong as our community.
Danbury Charter School: A Vision Ready to Begin
Danbury is Connecticut’s seventh-largest city, home to a vibrant and growing immigrant population — yet it remains the only major city in the state without a charter school. Overcrowded classrooms and limited access to innovative, college-prep models have left families with few options. The call for educational equity and choice has never been louder.

Context & Need: Why Danbury Needs a Charter School
Danbury is one of the most diverse and fastest-growing cities in Connecticut. Nearly 60% of its student population are Black or Latino, and over 50% come from households where English is not the primary language. Despite this rich diversity, families face overcrowded classrooms, academic achievement gaps, and limited access to high-quality, innovative public education.
The Danbury charter initiative was created to meet this urgent need, and to do so with community voices at the center of its design.

More Questions Families Are Asking:
We know families want clarity, action, and real answers. Below are some of the most important questions we hear — and what you need to know to stay informed and get involved.
What can I do to support the opening of the Danbury charter school?
You can sign petitions, attend community meetings, share accurate information on social media, and talk to your neighbors. Raising your voice helps decision-makers see that families want this school to open.
I’m a parent — how can I enroll my child when the school opens?
Once enrollment opens, families will be able to submit an application online. If there are more applicants than available seats, a public lottery will be held. Stay connected through email or text alerts to be notified.
Why are some people or groups opposing the school?
Opposition often comes from misinformation or fear of change. Some groups believe charter schools compete with district schools. But in truth, they offer a public, tuition-free alternative, not a replacement. It’s about options, not division.
Will the school reflect the values and culture of Danbury families?
Yes. This school is being built with community voices at the center — from curriculum design to staff hiring. The goal is to reflect Danbury’s diversity, pride, and aspirations.
How are charter schools held accountable?
Unlike district schools, charter schools must meet strict performance standards or risk closure. They’re reviewed regularly by the state and held accountable for both academic results and financial responsibility.
What makes this charter school different from a regular public school?
Yes. This school is being built with community voices at the center — from curriculum design to staff hiring. The goal is to reflect Danbury’s diversity, pride, and aspirations.
